In this course, learners will build on prior mathematical knowledge effectively bridging mathematical developmental gaps. Students will be exposed to algebraic concepts and real world applications that promote relevance. After completion of the course, students will have the necessary algebraic skills to successfully transition into appropriate higher level math classes required for their respective fields of study.
Course modules introduce the essential concepts and skills necessary for mastery of imperative mathematics and algebraic fundamentals and lead students through a series of leveling exercises and real world applications. Lessons include visual, auditory and active experiences to enhance learner retention and transfer.
Target Audience: This course is designed as an alternative tool to help bridge the gap between developmental education classes and the desired credit classes for those having difficulty passing college-level math entrance exams or whose placement test scores indicate the need for pre-college level math review.
Key strategies employed to support students in achieving learning outcomes include:
- Students begin each unit with a readiness assessment for appraisal of prior knowledge to be used as a personal benchmark. Students scoring 90% or above have the option to move to the next lesson allowing students to proceed at their own pace.
- Lessons include visual, auditory and active experiences to enhance learner retention and transfer. Each lesson includes illustrated content, animations, and activities.
- Interactive math tools and active simulations allow students to explore and practice newly learned skills, including a number line, a drag-and-drop number simulation, an expression builder and a graphing tool. A glossary of mathematical terms , symbols and formulas is also included.
- Immediate and targeted feedback provide instant support and allow students to assess their own performance. Branching pathways are activated, if needed, based on student responses and/or performance.
- Quizzes are included at the end of each lesson to evaluate knowledge transfer.
- The course is designed for one semester of classroom instruction.
- The course contains an introduction followed by 8 units of instruction.
- Each unit is segmented into lessons, for a course total of 13 lessons.
- The time to complete a lesson depends on how well a student progresses through the activities. Instructors can customize the course to meet school scheduling needs.
